the god bahubali story
Answer
Bahubali, also known as Gommateshvara, is one of the most respected figures in Jain tradition. He was the son of the first Tirthankar, Bhagwan Rishabhdev.
His story teaches the victory of the soul over ego, pride, anger, and attachment.
Story of Bahubali
Bhagwan Rishabhdev had two famous sons:
- Bharat Chakravarti
- Bahubali
After Bhagwan Rishabhdev renounced the world, his sons ruled different kingdoms. Bharat became a great emperor and wanted all his brothers to accept his authority.
Most brothers accepted, but Bahubali did not. This led to a conflict between Bharat and Bahubali.
To avoid a large war and unnecessary violence, they decided to settle the matter through individual contests instead of armies fighting. Bahubali defeated Bharat in these contests.
But at the moment of victory, Bahubali realized:
- “What is the use of winning over my brother?”
- “This pride and attachment only bind the soul.”
- “True victory is victory over the self.”
This deep realization awakened detachment in him.
Bahubali’s Renunciation
Bahubali gave up his kingdom and worldly pride. He stood in deep meditation, completely still.
He meditated for such a long time that:
- creepers grew around his legs,
- ants and insects moved near him,
- but he remained peaceful and unmoved.
However, one subtle thought remained in him: the feeling that he had not bowed to his younger brothers who had renounced before him. This small inner ego prevented him from attaining complete knowledge.
When this ego dissolved, Bahubali attained Keval Gnan, perfect and infinite knowledge.
Spiritual Understanding
Bahubali’s story shows that real greatness is not physical strength or political power. Real greatness is:
- conquering ego,
- giving up anger and pride,
- practicing non-violence,
- turning inward toward the soul.
That is why Bahubali is honored as a great example of inner victory.
Takeaway
Bahubali teaches us that the greatest battle is not with others, but with our own ego, attachment, and pride. True victory is self-realization.
