I follow tirthankar Vardhaman mahavir calendar panchang and in that today is saptami but in the jain temple near my house there is ashtami today so wich date should tithi i should follow
Answer
In Jain Dharma, for religious observances, you should generally follow the Jain Panchang/Tithi accepted by your local Sangh or temple, especially for temple rituals, Pratikraman, Pachakhān, Ayambil, Upvas, and collective observances.
So if the Jain temple near your house is observing Ashtami today, it is appropriate to follow Ashtami for your religious practice today.
Explanation
Sometimes two Panchangs may show different tithis because of differences in:
- sunrise-based calculation,
- local location/time zone,
- tithi beginning and ending time,
- tradition followed by the Sangh,
- whether the Panchang is prepared for a specific region.
In Jain practice, many observances are connected to the tithi prevailing at local sunrise or the method accepted by that Jain tradition. Therefore, a printed/app Panchang may differ from the temple’s local calculation.
Spiritual Understanding
The purpose of observing tithi is not only the calendar date, but also inner purification through:
- Samayik,
- Pratikraman,
- Jap,
- Tapasya,
- Ahimsa and self-restraint.
Following the local Sangh helps maintain unity and avoids confusion in religious practice.
Takeaway
For personal practice, you may respect your Panchang, but for Jain religious observance, it is best to follow the local Jain temple/Sangh tithi. If still unsure, ask the temple’s Maharaj Saheb, Sadhviji, or Panchang coordinator which Panchang and rule they follow.
