Why females cannot attain moksh
Answer
In Jain Dharma, this question is answered differently by the two main traditions:
- Śvetāmbara tradition: Women can attain moksha. They accept that a female soul can reach liberation.
- Digambara tradition: Women cannot attain moksha directly in a female body. According to this view, the soul must first be reborn as a male and then attain moksha.
So, it is not correct to say that “all Jainism teaches females cannot attain moksha.” This is specifically the Digambara position, while Śvetāmbaras accept women’s direct liberation.
Explanation
Jain Dharma teaches that the soul itself has no gender. Gender belongs to the body, not to the pure soul. Every soul has the same potential for infinite knowledge, infinite perception, infinite bliss, and liberation.
The difference arises because of views about the final stage of renunciation:
- Digambara view: Complete renunciation requires total non-possession, including giving up clothing. Since women cannot follow that form of nudity according to Digambara discipline, they are considered unable to become perfect Digambara munis in a female body. Therefore, moksha is not possible directly from female birth.
- Śvetāmbara view: Clothing does not prevent liberation if there is true detachment, right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. Therefore, women can attain moksha. Śvetāmbaras also accept Mallinātha, the 19th Tīrthankar, as female.
Spiritual Understanding
The deeper Jain principle is that liberation depends on the destruction of karma, not on worldly identity. Body, gender, caste, wealth, beauty, and social position are temporary. The soul’s purity is beyond all of them.
Both traditions agree that women are capable of deep spirituality, vows, tapasya, right faith, and great progress on the path of liberation.
Takeaway
In Jain Dharma, the soul is beyond gender. The disagreement is not about the worth of women’s souls, but about whether final liberation can occur directly in a female body. Śvetāmbara tradition says yes; Digambara tradition says rebirth as a male is required first.
