What do we see fossils as if not as a part of evolution?

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, fossils can be understood as physical remains or impressions of ancient living beings from earlier times. Jainism does not require seeing fossils as proof of biological evolution in the modern scientific sense.

From a Jain viewpoint, fossils may be seen as evidence that:

    • Many kinds of living beings have existed in the past.
    • Life has been present in the universe for an extremely long time.
    • Forms of bodies arise and perish according to karma, matter, time, and natural conditions.

    Explanation

Jainism teaches that the universe is beginningless and endless. Living souls, or jīvas, are also beginningless. A soul does not originate from matter, and life is not seen as beginning from non-life.

Bodies, however, are material. They are formed from pudgala — matter — and they change, decay, and perish. Fossils are connected to this material side of embodied life, not to the eternal nature of the soul.

So, rather than saying fossils prove that life itself evolved from matter, Jain Dharma would understand them as remains of past bodies inhabited by living souls.

    Spiritual Understanding

In Jain thought, the main concern is not tracing the physical ancestry of bodies, but understanding:

    • the existence of the soul,
    • bondage through karma,
    • rebirth in different life forms,
    • and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

A soul may be born in many types of bodies according to its karma. Therefore, different forms of life appearing across vast time does not disturb the Jain view. But Jainism does not reduce life to only a material process.

    Takeaway

Fossils, from a Jain perspective, may be seen as ancient material evidence of past embodied life. They show the impermanence of bodies, while Jain Dharma emphasizes the eternal journey of the soul and the importance of liberation.
