Before doing atthai what kind of preparation should we do so we can complete the tap
In Jainism, Atthai (also called Ashtahnika Parva or Atthai Tap) is a significant austerity where an individual observes complete fasting (upvas) for eight consecutive days. Undertaking Atthai Tap requires both physical and mental preparation, as well as spiritual readiness. Here are the recommended preparations according to Jain teachings and traditions:
1. Mental and Spiritual Preparation
- Resolve (Nischay): Make a strong mental determination (nischay) to complete the Atthai with devotion and sincerity. Understand the purpose of the tap, which is to purify the soul and reduce karmic bondage.
- Intention (Bhavna): Cultivate right intention and positive thoughts, such as forgiveness, compassion, and detachment from worldly affairs.
- Prayer and Pratikraman: Perform pratikraman (introspection and repentance) to cleanse any past misdeeds and prepare the mind.
- Seek Permission: It is customary to seek blessings from elders, gurus, or spiritual teachers (if available).
2. Physical Preparation
- Gradual Reduction: In the days leading up to the Atthai, gradually reduce food intake. Practice shorter fasts such as ekasanu (one meal a day) or upvas to accustom the body.
- Healthy Diet: Eat light and sattvic (pure) food before starting Atthai. Avoid heavy, spicy, or oily foods.
- Hydration: Ensure proper hydration before beginning, but remember that during Atthai, traditionally, even water is avoided (depending on the individual's capability and sect traditions).
3. Practical Arrangements
- Schedule: Clear your schedule of unnecessary engagements and commitments to avoid disturbances.
- Environment: Create a peaceful and clean environment conducive to meditation, prayer, and spiritual study.
- Support: Inform family members and arrange for moral support. If possible, join a group or community where others are also observing Atthai.
4. Spiritual Activities
- Scripture Reading: Prepare to spend time reading Jain scriptures (Agamas, Kalpasutra, etc.), performing samayik (meditation), and listening to discourses.
- Seva and Humility: Be ready to engage in selfless service and maintain humility throughout the period.
5. Medical Considerations
- Health Check: Consult a doctor if you have any medical conditions. Jainism values ahimsa (non-violence) towards oneself as well, so do not risk health unnecessarily.
6. After Atthai
- Phalahar (Breaking the Fast): Plan to break the fast gradually with light food (usually boiled water and fruits) and under supervision.
- Maintain Spiritual Upliftment: Continue with spiritual practices and try to carry forward the purity and resolve gained during Atthai.
Remember
- Atthai is not just about abstaining from food but also about spiritual upliftment, self-control, and purification of the soul. Focus on prayer, meditation, and reflection.
May your Atthai Tap be successful and bring you spiritual progress!
