If need to eat immediately in upvas then what should we do
Answer
If during upvas you feel you must eat immediately because of weakness, illness, dizziness, fainting risk, or any serious physical difficulty, you should break the fast calmly and respectfully.
In Jain Dharma, tapasya should be done with vivek — proper understanding — not with harm to the body.
What to Do
- Sit down calmly and avoid panic.
- If possible, take advice from a senior family member, guru, or knowledgeable person.
- Break the fast with simple and suitable food or drink, according to your health and tradition.
- Maintain humility and do not feel pride, guilt, or shame.
- Mentally do Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṃ and ask forgiveness if the fast could not be completed.
- Resolve to do future tapasya according to your strength.
Spiritual Understanding
The purpose of upvas is not only to avoid food, but to reduce passions, increase self-control, and purify the soul. If continuing the fast creates serious physical harm or mental disturbance, then breaking it with humility is better than continuing with distress, fear, or ego.
Takeaway
Do tapasya according to your capacity. If health requires food immediately, break the upvas respectfully, remember forgiveness, and continue your spiritual effort with sincerity.
