Why there is no thirthankar after mahavir swami
Answer
In Jain Dharma, there is no Tirthankar after Bhagwan Mahavir Swami in the present time-cycle because He was the 24th and last Tirthankar of this Avasarpini Kaal — the current descending half-cycle of time.
Explanation
According to Jain tradition, time moves in endless cycles. Each full cycle has two halves:
- Utsarpini — ascending time-cycle
- Avasarpini — descending time-cycle
In each half-cycle, 24 Tirthankars appear. Bhagwan Mahavir Swami was the 24th Tirthankar of the present Avasarpini. Therefore, after Him, no more Tirthankar will appear in this half-cycle.
This does not mean Tirthankars will never appear again. In future time-cycles, another set of 24 Tirthankars will appear.
Spiritual Understanding
A Tirthankar appears when the conditions of the world are suitable for re-establishing the Jain Sangh and guiding souls toward moksha.
Bhagwan Mahavir Swami fully revealed the path of:
- Samyak Darshan — right faith
- Samyak Jnan — right knowledge
- Samyak Charitra — right conduct
His teachings continue through the Jain scriptures, Acharyas, Sadhus, Sadhvis, Shravaks, and Shravikas.
Takeaway
There is no Tirthankar after Mahavir Swami because He completed the sequence of 24 Tirthankars in the current Avasarpini Kaal. The path He taught remains the guiding light for spiritual liberation.
