When to take pachkaan for upwas
In Jainism, "pachkaan" (also spelled as "pachkhan" or "pachkhaan") is a religious vow or resolve taken before undertaking an austerity, such as upwas (fasting). It is a formal declaration of your intent and the rules you will follow during the fast.
When to take pachkaan for upwas:
- Pachkaan should be taken before sunrise on the day you intend to do upwas.
- The ideal time is after your morning pratikraman (ritual of repentance and reflection), but before the sun rises, as no food or water should be consumed after sunrise on upwas.
- It is generally taken in the presence of a Jain monk/nun (Sadhu/Sadhvi) if available, or in front of an idol of a Tirthankara or a sacred Jain text at home or in the temple.
- The pachkaan can be recited individually or collectively, and it is important to clearly state the type of upwas (full fast, ekasana, etc.), and any specific rules you are following.
Summary: Take pachkaan for upwas before sunrise, ideally after morning pratikraman, and always before beginning your fast.
