Why we should not eat aloo and koda
Answer
In Jain Dharma, we avoid eating aloo (potato) and similar root vegetables because they involve more violence toward living beings.
If by “koda” you mean another root vegetable such as kanda/onion, then the same principle applies.
Explanation
Jain food discipline is based on Ahimsa — non-violence.
Root vegetables like potato grow underground. When they are pulled out:
- The whole plant is destroyed.
- Many tiny organisms living in the soil may be harmed.
- Root vegetables are considered to contain many subtle life forms.
- They may sprout again, showing strong life potential.
So, eating them causes more harm compared to fruits, grains, and vegetables where the whole plant may not need to be destroyed.
Spiritual Understanding
Jains avoid such foods not because they are “bad” in taste or nutrition, but because we try to reduce harm as much as possible.
The purpose is to develop:
- Compassion
- Self-control
- Awareness while eating
- Respect for even the smallest living beings
Takeaway
We avoid aloo and root vegetables to practice Ahimsa in daily life and reduce harm to countless subtle living beings.
