What is moksh, how do we know it exists?

    an hour ago 6

    Answer

In Jain Dharma, Moksh means the complete liberation of the soul from all karma.

When a soul destroys all karmas, it becomes completely pure, free from birth and death, free from suffering, and remains forever in its natural state of infinite knowledge, infinite perception, infinite bliss, and infinite energy.

Such liberated souls are called Siddhas.

    Explanation

    According to Jain philosophy:

    • The soul is eternal.
    • Karma is a subtle material bondage attached to the soul due to passions, attachment, aversion, and actions.
    • Because of karma, the soul goes through birth, death, pleasure, pain, ignorance, and worldly existence.
    • When all karmas are completely removed, the soul becomes free forever. This state is Moksh.

Moksh is not a place of worldly pleasure. It is the soul’s highest, purest, and permanent state.

In Jain tradition, liberated souls reside at the top of the universe, called Siddhashila, after leaving the cycle of rebirth.

How do we know Moksh exists?

Jain Dharma understands Moksh through several foundations:

    • Teachings of the Tirthankars: The Tirthankars attained Keval Gnan, perfect knowledge, and directly realized the nature of the soul, karma, universe, and liberation.
    • Scriptural tradition: Jain Agams and later authoritative Jain texts describe the soul, karma, bondage, and liberation in detail.
    • Logical reasoning: If bondage is caused by karma, and karma can be stopped and destroyed, then freedom from bondage is possible.
    • Spiritual experience: Jain practice shows that as passions reduce, inner peace, clarity, detachment, and purity increase. This points toward the possibility of complete purity.
    • Examples of Arihants and Siddhas: Jain tradition accepts that Tirthankars and other liberated beings have actually attained this state.

    Spiritual Understanding

Moksh matters because Jain Dharma teaches that worldly happiness is temporary. Wealth, status, relationships, and physical comfort all change. Even heavenly pleasures are temporary.

The soul’s true nature is not dependency, fear, anger, greed, or attachment. Its true nature is purity, knowledge, peace, and bliss.

Moksh is the complete realization of that true nature.

    Takeaway

Moksh is the final freedom of the soul from karma and rebirth. Jain Dharma knows it through the direct realization of the Tirthankars, scriptural teaching, reasoning, and the inner transformation seen through spiritual practice.
