Can I drink water
In Jainism, drinking water is permitted, but there are important guidelines to follow due to the principle of ahimsa (non-violence) and the desire to minimize harm to even the tiniest life forms:
- Filtered Water: Jains are advised to drink only filtered or boiled water to avoid harming microscopic organisms that may be present in unfiltered water.
- Daytime Drinking: Traditionally, strict Jains, especially monks and nuns, avoid drinking water after sunset to minimize the risk of consuming living beings that proliferate at night.
- Moderation: Water should be consumed mindfully and only when necessary, as excessive consumption or wastage can lead to unnecessary harm.
For householders (lay followers), these rules are generally followed as much as practical. For monks and nuns, the rules are more stringent.
