Athai pachkhan short in Swetambar Jains

    12 months ago 300

Certainly! In Śvetāmbara Jain tradition, "Athai Pachkhan" refers to the vow (pachkhan) taken to observe an eight-day fast (Athai Tap), typically during Paryushan or at other auspicious times. The short version of the Athai Pachkhan is a formal declaration, usually in Prakrit or Gujarati, where the practitioner resolves to abstain from food (sometimes water, based on the type of fast) for eight consecutive days.

Here is a short version commonly recited by Śvetāmbara Jains:

Gujarati (Romanized): ``` Aaj thi aṭh divas sudhi, huṁ upvaas karīś. Aṭh divas sudhi anna ane jal nu tyag karīś. Jivdaya rakhi, samyak dhyan thi, sāmāyik, pratikraman, pratyākhyān karīś. Mārā pachkhan ni sakshi ma, savdhān raheesh, Micchāmi Dukkadam. ```

English Translation: ``` From today, for eight days, I will observe fasting. For eight days, I will renounce food and water (as per the type of fast). With compassion, mindfulness, I will perform sāmāyik, pratikraman, and pratyākhyān. In witness of this vow, I will remain vigilant. Micchāmi Dukkadam (I seek forgiveness for any transgressions). ```

This short pachkhan can be taken in the presence of a Guru, Upadhyay, or in front of the image of Tirthankara, according to Śvetāmbara tradition. Always consult your local Jain Sangh or Guru for the most authentic version and procedure.
