When to drink water in athai fast

    10 months ago 682

In Jainism, an "athai" fast (also known as "ashtahnika" or "athai tap") is a type of fasting where a person abstains from eating solid food for eight consecutive days. The rules regarding water consumption during athai can vary based on the level of austerity the practitioner wishes to observe and the specific tradition (sect) they follow:

    1. Svetambara Tradition:

    - Many Svetambara Jains allow the consumption of boiled water during the daytime, strictly between sunrise and sunset. - Water must be boiled fresh, typically the same day, to minimize harm to living beings (microorganisms) and consumed in limited quantities.

    1. Digambara Tradition:

    - The Digambara tradition often observes more rigorous austerities. Some may abstain from drinking water entirely (nirjal athai), while others may consume water only once a day or in very limited quantities, always boiled and only during daylight.

    General Rules:

    • Water should always be boiled and consumed during daylight hours, not after sunset.
    • The exact time and frequency depend on the individual's vow and capacity, but the principle is to minimize harm and observe self-discipline.

Important: The guidance of a Jain monk, nun, or knowledgeable layperson (shrāvaka) is recommended before undertaking such a fast, as athai is a physically demanding austerity and should be observed with proper understanding and health considerations.

Summary: During the athai fast, if water is to be consumed, it should be boiled and drunk only during the day (after sunrise and before sunset), following the specific rules of your Jain tradition and personal vow.
