Dos and donts in paryushan
During Paryushan, which is one of the most important festivals in Jainism, the focus is on spiritual upliftment, self-purification, and following the core tenets of Jain teachings. Here are the Dos and Don'ts based on Jain tradition:
Dos in Paryushan:
- Practice Ahimsa (Non-violence): Be extra cautious to avoid harm to any living being, including through thoughts, words, and actions.
- Fasting (Upvaas): According to one's capacity, observe fasting or eat only boiled food, especially prepared before sunset.
- Pratikraman (Introspection and Repentance): Perform pratikraman daily, reflecting on mistakes and seeking forgiveness.
- Attend Pravachan (Spiritual Discourses): Listen to teachings and discourses by Jain monks and scholars.
- Study Jain Scriptures: Read and reflect upon Jain texts like Kalpasutra, Tattvartha Sutra, and others.
- Practice Forgiveness (Kshama): Seek forgiveness from all living beings and forgive others wholeheartedly, especially on Samvatsari (for Shwetambar) or Kshamavani (for Digambar).
- Charity and Compassion: Engage in acts of kindness, charity, and helping others.

- Avoid Root Vegetables: Do not consume root vegetables (like potatoes, onions, garlic) as uprooting them harms many small organisms.
- Refrain from Anger, Greed, Ego, Deceit: Avoid negative emotions and thoughts.
- No Entertainment: Avoid movies, parties, and unnecessary outings; focus on spirituality.
- Do Not Waste Food or Resources: Be mindful of wastage, as it leads to unnecessary harm.
- Avoid Non-Vegetarian and Fermented Foods: Strictly follow Jain dietary restrictions.
- Do Not Lie or Gossip: Avoid untruths, gossip, or slander.
- No Criticizing Others: Do not judge or criticize others; instead, focus on self-improvement.
- Limit Worldly Activities: Reduce business and material pursuits to devote more time to spiritual practices.
