I’m sorry you witnessed that suffering. No living being should be left in untreated agony, and your anger is understandable.

Jain Dharma teaches ahimsa — non-violence — but ahimsa does not mean neglect. It requires compassion, responsibility, care, and reduction of suffering as far as possible.

A Jain-funded shelter that allows animals to remain in severe pain without proper treatment, pain relief, hygiene, mobility support, or qualified veterinary care is not a good example of Jain compassion. It may be acting from fear of killing, but Jain ethics also recognize that carelessness, neglect, and allowing preventable suffering are forms of harm.

    In Jain understanding:

    • Animals should be treated with kindness and dignity.
    • Injured beings should receive proper medical care.
    • Compassion must be practical, not symbolic.
    • Ahimsa is not merely “do not kill”; it is also “do not cause suffering.”

The hardest issue is euthanasia. Traditional Jain discipline is very cautious about intentionally ending life, even out of pity, because intention and killing both carry karmic seriousness. But that does not justify abandoning an animal in agony. At minimum, Jain compassion demands competent veterinary treatment, pain management, clean care, feeding, hydration, and honest responsibility.

Your hatred is directed at what you saw: suffering protected by ideology. I will not defend that. If Jain principles are used to excuse cruelty, then those principles are being misunderstood or applied without compassion.

The Jain ideal is not “keep bodies alive at any cost.” The Jain ideal is reverence for life, reduction of harm, self-restraint, and deep compassion toward every living being.

What you described sounds heartbreaking, and it deserves reform, accountability, and better veterinary ethics — not religious slogans.
