Why Ravana can become our next Tirthankara
Answer
In Jain tradition, Ravana is not viewed as eternally evil or permanently condemned. He is understood as a powerful soul who committed serious wrong actions due to passions like pride, attachment, and desire, but who also had spiritual potential.
According to Jain tradition, Ravana will become a future Tirthankara in the coming time cycle because a soul can purify itself through right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, austerity, and destruction of karmas.
Explanation
Jain Dharma teaches that every soul has the inherent capacity to attain liberation. A soul may fall into wrong conduct in one life and rise spiritually in another life.
Ravana’s life shows two sides:
- He was highly learned, powerful, and devoted in certain religious practices.
- But he was also overcome by ego, attachment, and passions.
Because of his negative karmas, he had to suffer the consequences. However, Jainism does not define a soul forever by one lifetime’s mistakes. When the soul later develops purity, detachment, compassion, and perfect spiritual discipline, it can rise to the highest spiritual state.
In Jain belief, future Tirthankaras are souls who have accumulated the special Tirthankara-nāma-karma and will eventually guide others across saṃsāra by re-establishing the fourfold Jain saṅgha.
Spiritual Understanding
Ravana becoming a future Tirthankara teaches an important Jain principle:
- No soul is permanently sinful.
- Karma gives results, but karma can also be destroyed.
- Spiritual transformation is possible for every soul.
- Even a fallen soul can rise to supreme purity through true repentance, discipline, and right conduct.
This does not mean Jainism approves of Ravana’s wrong actions. Rather, it means the soul of Ravana, after undergoing karmic consequences and future spiritual purification, will become worthy of Tirthankara status.
Takeaway
Ravana can become a future Tirthankara because Jain Dharma sees every soul as capable of complete purification. A soul is not judged forever by one life; through the destruction of karmas and perfect spiritual effort, even a deeply flawed soul can eventually become a world-teacher.
