Upvas with water only nu pachkhan

    12 months ago 260

In Jainism, an Upvas (fast) is a significant spiritual practice observed to purify the soul and exercise self-control. The most common form of Upvas is complete abstinence from all food and sometimes water, from sunrise to sunrise (approximately 36 hours).

However, there are variations based on individual capacity, health, and religious prescription. One such variation is "Upvas with water only", where a person abstains from all solid and liquid foods, but is allowed to consume only boiled water during certain permitted times.

Pachkhan for "Upvas with Water Only"

Pachkhan is a formal vow or declaration made before commencing the fast. When taking a Pachkhan for Upvas with water only, you are essentially resolving to abstain from all kinds of food and only take boiled water, usually during daylight hours and after proper filtration, as per Jain rules.

Sample Pachkhan (in English and Gujarati):

English: "I take the Pachkhan (vow) that for today, I will observe Upvas. I will not consume any food, fruits, milk, or any edible substances. I will only drink boiled water, and that too only between sunrise and sunset, as per the Jain tradition. I will not harm any living beings knowingly or unknowingly during this period."

    Key Points:

    • Only boiled and cooled water (usually filtered through a cloth) is permitted.
    • Water should be taken only during daylight (from sunrise to sunset).
    • No food or other liquids (milk, juice, etc.) are allowed.
    • The Pachkhan should be taken in front of an idol, a Jain monk/nun, or at least with full awareness and resolve.

Note: The exact wording and rules may vary by Jain sect (Shwetambar, Digambar, etc.) and local traditions. When in doubt, consult your local Jain priest or spiritual guide for the most appropriate Pachkhan in your community.

If you wish for the Pachkhan in any specific language or sect's tradition, please specify!
