Normal Upvas pachkan
In Jainism, Upvas (fasting) is a significant spiritual practice performed to purify the soul, control desires, and accumulate punya (good karma). During Upvas, a person refrains from consuming any food and sometimes water, depending on their capacity and resolve. After taking the vow of Upvas, a pachkan (pratyakhyan or formal resolution) is recited to set the boundaries and intention for the fast.
Here is a simple version of the Normal Upvas Pachkan (for Shwetambar tradition, in Hindi/Sanskrit mixed with English transliteration):
---
Upvas Pachkan
Samayik, Pratikraman, or Pachkan ke samay par bola jaata hai:
“Ichchhami padikkamami / Padikkamami samiyam Upvasam karemi, jivaviharam paccakkhami, annam, panam, khadim, sayam, rasam, phanam, vivittam, paccakkhami, evammi samaye evammi samayam, savvadukkhapaccakkhanatthaya, appanam vosirami.”
Meaning: "I take the vow of Upvas (fasting) for today. I renounce all types of living beings (jiv), food (anna), water (pana), fruits, spices, and all consumables, for the sake of spiritual upliftment and to destroy karmas. I will not consume or indulge in any such things till sunrise tomorrow."
---
A simple English version:
"I undertake the vow of Upvas today as per Jain tradition. I will not eat or drink anything from sunrise today to sunrise tomorrow, for spiritual purification. Whatever faults may occur knowingly or unknowingly, I ask for forgiveness."
---
Important Notes:
- The exact wording might differ by Jain sect (Shwetambar, Digambar, etc.) and local tradition.
- It is customary to recite the Pachkan in the presence of a Guru, elder, or at the temple, but it can also be done individually with sincere intention.
- The Pachkan marks the beginning of the fast and the resolve to adhere to all rules during Upvas.
