Which pachkhan taken to break upavas

    12 months ago 81

In Jainism, after completing an upavas (fast), it is customary to recite a specific pachkhan (a vow or declaration) before breaking the fast. The pachkhan is a formal statement of intent, expressing that the upavas is now concluded, and that one will now partake in food with certain resolutions.

A commonly recited pachkhan for breaking upavas is:

"Micchami Dukkadam, ajja aham upavāsassa pachchakkhānam samāiyam, pāṇātipātam veramani, musāvādā veramani, rātribhojanā veramani, atichārā veramani, samaiyam."

Or, in a slightly more elaborate form (in Prakrit/Sanskrit mixed):

"Ichchhāmi khāmemi savva-jīvehiṃ, savva-pāvappaṭikammaṃ, khamemi savva-jīvehiṃ, micchāmi dukkaḍaṃ. Ajja aham upavāsassa pachchakkhānam samāiyam, pāṇātipātā veramani, musāvādā veramani, rātribhojanā veramani, atichārā veramani, samaiyam."

Meaning: "I seek forgiveness from all living beings, may all my transgressions be forgiven. Now, I am ending my upavas (fast) with this pachkhan (vow) and resolve to abstain from violence, falsehood, night-eating, and other transgressions, and to stay in equanimity."

Note: The exact wording and language may vary among Jain sects (Shwetambar, Digambar, Sthanakvasi, etc.), and sometimes the pachkhan is given by a Jain monk, nun, or an elder, or recited individually.

It is recommended to recite the pachkhan with sincerity and mindfulness, reaffirming one's commitment to Jain principles while breaking the fast.
