    Paryushan Krtavya numbers

    12 months ago 85

In Jainism, Paryushan is one of the most important annual festivals, observed primarily by Shwetambar Jains (while Digambar Jains observe a similar festival called Dashlakshan Parva). During Paryushan, there are specific duties or Krtavya (कृतव्य)—prescribed practices and observances for spiritual upliftment.

The Krtavyas during Paryushan are traditionally enumerated as six main duties, commonly known as ṣaḍāvaśyaka (षडावश्यक):

    1. Sāmāyika (सामायिक) – Practising equanimity and meditation.
    2. Chaturvimshati-stava (चतुर्विंशति-स्तव) – Worshipping the 24 Tirthankaras.
    3. Vandana (वंदना) – Offering obeisance to monks and nuns.
    4. Pratikraman (प्रतिक्रमण) – Repentance and self-reflection for transgressions.
    5. Kayotsarga (कायोत्सर्ग) – Meditative abandonment of the body, focusing on the soul.
    6. Pratyakhyana (प्रत्याख्यान) – Taking vows and renunciations.

These six duties are to be performed daily, but their observance is emphasized and intensified during Paryushan.

    Summary Table:

    | Krtavya Number | Name | Description | |----------------|---------------------------|--------------------------------------| | 1 | Sāmāyika | Equanimity/Meditation | | 2 | Chaturvimshati-stava | Praise of 24 Tirthankaras | | 3 | Vandana | Respect to saints/monks | | 4 | Pratikraman | Repentance/self-reflection | | 5 | Kayotsarga | Meditative posture (body abandonment)| | 6 | Pratyakhyana | Vows/renunciation |

These are the six Paryushan Krtavyas (Ṣaḍāvaśyaka) as per Jain tradition.
