    What is tivihar pachkhan

    12 months ago 297

In Jainism, "Tivihar Pachkhan" refers to a specific type of vow (pachkhan) taken by lay followers (śrāvaks and śrāvikās) related to the code of conduct regarding movement and eating.

    Meaning:

    • "Ti" means "three."
    • "Vihar" means "movement" or "places of movement."
    • "Pachkhan" means "a vow" or "resolution"—a formal declaration to observe a certain conduct.

Tivihar Pachkhan is the vow in which a layperson resolves to restrict themselves to three places for eating or movement within a particular period (commonly for the next day or until a certain time). These three places could be, for example, the home, workplace, and a relative’s house, or any three specific locations decided in advance.

    Purpose and Significance:

    • It is primarily observed to minimize violence (himsa) and attachment (raag).
    • By limiting movement, one reduces the risk of harming living beings and curbs desires related to visiting multiple places for food or pleasure.
    • It aids in practicing self-control, discipline, and non-attachment.

    How it is Practiced:

    • The practitioner mentally and/or verbally declares the three places they will restrict movement to for a certain period.
    • This vow is often taken in the presence of a Jain monk/nun or at home with proper intent.
    • The vow is typically renewed daily or as per one’s spiritual practice.

In summary: Tivihar Pachkhan is a self-imposed vow by Jains to restrict their movement and eating to only three predetermined places for a specific period, as a means to practice non-violence, discipline, and self-restraint.
