When is samvatsari for deravasi and sthanakvasi

    12 months ago 479

In Jainism, Samvatsari is the most important day of the Paryushana festival for the Shwetambar sect. It is the day of forgiveness (Kshamavani), when Jains seek forgiveness from others for any harm caused knowingly or unknowingly.

    • For Deravasi Shwetambar Jains (who worship in temples), Samvatsari is observed on the last day of Paryushana, which usually falls on the Chaturthi or Panchami of the bright half of Bhadrapada month (August or September, depending on the lunar calendar).
    • For Sthanakvasi Shwetambar Jains (who do not worship idols and follow temple-less practices), Samvatsari is also observed on the last day of their eight-day Paryushana festival. Sometimes, their dates may differ by a day or two from the Deravasi, depending on local traditions and differences in calendar calculations.

    In summary:

    • Samvatsari for both Deravasi and Sthanakvasi is generally on the same day, but in some years, Sthanakvasis might observe it a day earlier or later than Deravasis due to calendar differences.

To know the exact date for a particular year, it is best to refer to a Jain Panchang (calendar) or consult your local Jain community, as the dates vary according to the lunar calendar.
