can raw vegetables be eaten during paryushan?
During Paryushan, many Jains observe stricter dietary rules than usual to enhance spiritual purification and minimize harm to living beings. Among the Svetambara Jains, it is customary to avoid eating green, leafy, or root vegetables, as well as raw vegetables, because they contain more life forms and consuming them causes greater himsa (violence). Most Svetambaras restrict their diet to only grains, pulses, nuts, and dried fruits during these days. Some may also avoid fruits that contain seeds.
Digambara Jains also follow strict dietary restrictions during Paryushan (also called Das Lakshan), often limiting their intake to only one or two meals a day and avoiding root vegetables, green vegetables, and sometimes even certain fruits.
So, traditionally, raw vegetables are avoided during Paryushan by both major Jain sects to minimize violence and practice greater self-restraint. However, practices may vary depending on individual vows and community customs. Always consult your local Jain community or spiritual teacher for specific guidance.
