Sub sects of Swetambaras
Within Jainism, the Śvetāmbara (Shvetambara) sect is one of the two major denominations, the other being Digambara. The Śvetāmbara sect itself has three primary sub-sects:
- Murtipujaka (Mandirmargi)
- Also called "Deravasi," this sub-sect worships idols (murtis) of the Tirthankaras in temples (derasars or mandirs). - They follow rituals, temple worship, and religious ceremonies.
- Sthānakavāsī
- This group emerged in the 17th century as a reform movement. - Sthānakavāsīs oppose image worship and temple rituals. - Their places of worship are called "Sthānakas," which are simple halls without idols.
- Terāpanthī
- Founded by Acharya Bhikshu in the 18th century. - Like Sthānakavāsīs, Terāpanthīs also do not worship idols. - They emphasize strict discipline and have a single Acharya (spiritual leader) at a time.
Each of these sub-sects shares the core Śvetāmbara beliefs and scriptures but differs in practices, especially regarding idol worship and rituals.
