is masturbation ahimsa because it kills all the sperm cell which are living form in billions

    12 months ago 162

In Jainism, ahimsa (non-violence) is the highest ethical principle, and it applies to all forms of life, including the smallest and most microscopic beings (nigodas). Jain scriptures and teachings emphasize that one should avoid causing harm to any living being, regardless of its size or form.

Regarding masturbation, Jain philosophy does not primarily focus on the destruction of sperm as an act of violence (himsa) in the same way as killing visible living beings. Sperm cells are considered to have only one sense (ekendriya) and are classified as microscopic life forms. However, traditional Jain ethics consider sexual conduct, including masturbation, primarily from the standpoint of self-restraint (brahmacharya).

For lay Jains (shravaks), complete celibacy is not required, but sexual activity should be limited to one’s spouse and for procreation, not for pleasure. For monks and nuns (sadhus and sadhvis), complete celibacy is mandatory.

The main reasons Jainism discourages masturbation are:

    1. Attachment and Passion: Masturbation is seen as an act driven by passions (kashayas) such as desire and attachment, which binds karma to the soul and hinders spiritual progress.
    2. Violation of Self-Restraint: It is considered a breach of brahmacharya, one of the five main vows (maha-vratas) for ascetics and an important vow (anuvrata) for householders.
    3. Mental Himsa: Even if not classified as physical violence, such acts are considered to disturb the mind and increase passions, which is contrary to the practice of ahimsa at the mental level.

In summary: While Jainism does not specifically categorize masturbation as himsa due to the destruction of sperm cells, it discourages the practice due to its association with passions and the violation of self-restraint. The focus is on controlling desires and minimizing all forms of himsa—physical, mental, and verbal—for spiritual progress.
