“Pak” is unclear by itself. In Jain usage it most commonly points to:

• Paksha (fortnight): the lunar half-month. There are two each month—Shukla Paksha (bright half, from new moon to full moon) and Krishna Paksha (dark half, from full moon to new moon). Many Jain vrats and paryushans are timed by paksha.

• Karma-pāka (fruition of karma): pāka means “ripening.” When bound karmas mature, they give their result (pleasure, pain, lifespan, status, etc.). This is called karmapāka in Jain karma theory.

• Paksha (standpoint/side): in logic, a “paksha” can mean a standpoint or the subject under discussion, used in Jain nyāya and naya (viewpoints).
