Is this ok to boil water @5 pm
In Jain practice, boiling water should be done in daylight, ideally well before sunset, to minimize himsa (harm to tiny beings).
- If 5 pm is before sunset where you live: it is OK. Boil, filter with a clean, tightly woven cloth (3–4 layers), cover while cooling, and use the water within a day.
- If 5 pm is at or after sunset: avoid boiling then. Prepare earlier in the day and store properly.
Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions advise daytime preparation of boiled/filtered water and careful storage to reduce harm. If there is a genuine health need and you must boil after sunset, do it with utmost care and restraint.
