Is this ok to boil water @ 5 am because of school
Short answer: If 5:00 am is before sunrise where you live, it is better not to boil then. In Jain household practice, water for drinking (ushṇodaka) should ideally be boiled and filtered during daylight (after sunrise and before sunset) to minimize hiṁsā of night‑active micro‑organisms.
What to do for school:
- Best: Boil and filter enough water before sunset the previous day. Let it cool, then store it covered in a clean vessel. Use a clean, tightly woven cloth or proper filter.
- Use time limits: Drink this boiled water within about 24 hours; then replace it. Do not keep re‑boiling the same water.
- If in your location sunrise is earlier than 5:00 am (e.g., in peak summer), boiling after sunrise at that time is acceptable.
- If there’s an unavoidable situation, follow your guru/parents’ guidance, but return to daylight boiling as soon as you can.
Tradition notes:
- Śvetāmbara and Digambara lay practices both encourage preparing and filtering drinking water in daylight hours. Specific household rules may vary by sangh and ācārya’s maryādā.
