How to perform pratikraman with sutra sloks and actions
Below is a simple, authentic way to perform Pratikraman at home. Steps and sutras are given in a short form, with the essential actions. I am giving both Shwetambar (Murtipujak) and Digambar flows, since they differ a little. Use the pronunciation you have learned from your guru or family.
General preparation (for both traditions)
- Time: Morning (Rāi) and Evening (Devāsī). Sit on a clean āsana in a quiet place.
- Sweep your sitting area gently (to avoid harming tiny beings) and sit in Padmāsana/Ardha-padma or on a firm chair if needed.
- Keep your mouth covered with muhpattī (Shwetambar) during sutra recitation if that is your practice.
- Maintain maitri (friendliness), dayā (compassion), and apramāda (alertness).
