When to take muthi saiyam pachkana
“Muthi Saiyam Pachkana” (Muththi Sanyam Pratyakhyan) is a layperson’s vow to limit food by a fixed number of fistfuls (muththi) for a set time. You take it before the period of restraint begins.
When to take it
- For the day: take the pratyakhyan in the morning after sunrise, before taking any food or water for the day’s meals.
- For the night: take it after sunset for the coming night (and, if intended, for the next day’s first meal).
- For special sādhanā days: at the start of Paryushan/Dashalakshan, Ayambil Oli, Pakkhi (fortnightly) pratikraman days, or any day you choose to practice extra restraint—always before the first intake covered by the vow.
- With a teacher present: ideally in the presence of a guru/pravartini. If not possible, stand facing the Jina image or a pure place, after a brief sāmāyik or pratikraman, and then take the vow.
How to take it (simple, traditional way)
- Specify clearly: the number of muththis per meal, which items are allowed/avoided, and the exact duration (e.g., “today’s lunch only,” “today till sunset,” or “from tonight till tomorrow’s lunch”).
- Keep it within capacity and free of anger, pride, deceit, or greed.
- If the vow is broken, do ālochana–pratikraman and then retake it properly.
Tradition notes
- Shvetambar usage commonly says “pachchakkhan/pratyakhyan”; Digambar usage says “pratyakhyana” and ties it to parimāṇa (measured) vrata. The timing principles are the same: take it before the eating period it will govern and state clear limits.
Example for clarity (today’s date is August 20, 2025)
- Morning of Aug 20: after a short sāmāyik, take pratyakhyan: “For today till sunset, I will take only two muththis per meal, without fried items.”
- Evening of Aug 20: after sunset, take pratyakhyan for the night if you wish to limit or avoid night eating.
Keep it simple, truthful, and well-defined so the saiyam is pure and effective.
