What are the different aaras as per jainism
In Jainism, time is considered to be eternal and is divided into endless cycles, each consisting of two halves: Utsarpini (ascending or progressive half) and Avasarpini (descending or regressive half). Each of these halves is further divided into six distinct periods known as āras (also spelled as aaras or aras).
The Six Āras
- Sukhama Sukhama (Most Pleasant)
- Duration: Extremely long (crores of years) - Characteristics: Maximum happiness, no sorrow, longevity, minimal needs, and natural fulfillment of desires. People are very tall, live for lakhs of years, and do not need to work for food or shelter.
- Sukhama (Pleasant)
- Duration: Slightly shorter than the first āra - Characteristics: Still much happiness, but slightly less than the first. People are still tall and healthy, but minor discomforts may arise.
- Sukhama Dukhama (Pleasant-Unpleasant)
- Duration: Shorter than previous āras - Characteristics: Mixed experiences of happiness and sorrow. This is the period when Tirthankaras are born and preach.
- Dukhama Sukhama (Unpleasant-Pleasant)
- Duration: Shorter still - Characteristics: More sorrow than happiness. The quality of life declines further.
- Dukhama (Unpleasant)
- Duration: Much shorter - Characteristics: Predominance of sorrow. No Tirthankaras are born in this era. Misery, suffering, and moral decline are widespread.
- Dukhama Dukhama (Most Unpleasant)
- Duration: Shortest - Characteristics: Extreme misery, no trace of happiness. People are very short-lived, and moral and physical conditions are at their worst.
The Current Era
According to Jain tradition, we are currently in the fifth āra (Dukhama) of the Avasarpini (descending half) in Bharat Kshetra (India and surrounding areas). This āra is marked by sorrow, decline in virtues, and spiritual degeneration. After the sixth āra, the cycle will reverse, and Utsarpini will begin.
