are unfertilized eggs ok to eat
In Jainism, eggs—fertilized or unfertilized—are not considered acceptable to eat.
Reasons in brief:
- Ahimsa: Food from animal origin is avoided to prevent harm and to honor the potential for life.
- Saumyata (purity of diet): Eggs are considered unsuitable for a sattvic, restraint‑oriented life and can disturb mental calm needed for sadhana.
- Practical vow‑keeping: It is difficult for laypeople to ensure whether an egg is fertilized or how it was obtained, so Jains abstain from all eggs.
Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions teach a strictly vegetarian (lacto‑vegetarian) diet for laypeople and complete abstinence from eggs. Monastics are even stricter.
Therefore, unfertilized eggs are not okay to eat according to Jain Dharma.
