Can ginger powder be consumed as ginger is not consumable in Jainism?
Short answer: No. If you avoid ginger in Jainism, its powder (saunth/sonth) is also to be avoided.
Reason:
- Ginger is a root (kand-mool). Uprooting it harms many tiny lives and the plant itself. Drying or powdering does not change its nature.
- For shravaks who keep the vow of avoiding roots, all forms—fresh, dried, powdered, or in spice mixes—should be avoided.
Tradition notes:
- Digambar and Shvetambar both class root/tuber items as non-consumable. Ginger falls in this group in both traditions.
- Limited exception: as aushadhi (medicine) during illness, in the smallest necessary quantity, without desire for taste, and ideally with niyam (self-restraint) or guidance of a knowledgeable elder. This is not general permission for daily use.
