DO men have a different charavado than women?

    12 months ago 161

Short answer: No. In Jain Dharma the core vows and conduct are the same.

    • For householders (shravak and shravika): The 12 vows are identical for both—5 anuvratas (small vows), 3 gunavratas, and 4 shikshavratas. Daily duties like samayik, pratikraman, swadhyaya, and fasting practices (e.g., poshadh, chauvihar) apply equally.
    • For renunciants (sadhus and sadhvis): The five great vows (mahavratas)—ahimsa, satya, achaurya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha—are the same. Some detailed rules differ only for practical modesty and safety (for example, clothing and movement), not in spiritual content.

    Tradition notes:

    • Shvetambar: Women can attain kevaljnan and moksha; their path of conduct is fully complete.
    • Digambar: Classical view holds that moksha is not attained in the female body; still, aryikas (nuns) follow the same mahavratas and disciplined conduct, with differences mainly in external practices (like attire).

Community customs may vary by region, but these are social practices, not differences in the Jain vows or core code of conduct.
