first meal for besana can be done at what time?
In Jain practice, “Besana” (Biyasan) means eating twice in a day.
- First meal: after Navkarsi, i.e., at least 48 minutes after local sunrise, and during daylight only.
- Second meal: later in the day, also during daylight, and never after sunset.
- No eating between the two sittings; only permitted water as per your tradition’s rules.
Notes on traditions:
- Shwetambar: first meal is taken after Navkarsi (48 minutes post-sunrise).
- Digambar: same daylight principle; many observe stricter rules for water (only boiled/filtered within set hours).
So, check your local sunrise time and begin the first meal only after 48 minutes have passed.
