Can I consume pumpkin and sunflower seeds in paryushan?
Short answer: Usually yes, but it depends on the maryada (rules) you are following for Paryushan.
- Shwetambar tradition: During Paryushan many observe “no green vegetables.” Plain, unsprouted pumpkin and sunflower seeds are generally acceptable like dry fruits/nuts—if they are fresh for the day, inspected for insects, and eaten only in daylight.
- Digambar tradition (Das Lakshan): Many follow stricter vows (upvas, ekasan, boiled-food-only, taste-restraint). In such vows, added items like roasted/seasoned seeds are avoided; some also take “beej-tyag” (renouncing seeds). If you’ve taken these vows, do not consume them.
Good practice for both:
- Only unsprouted, plain (no oil, salt, masala), prepared the same day before sunset.
- Carefully check for insects; use minimal quantity.
- If your sangh/acharya has instructed “beej-tyag” or any stricter niyam, then avoid all seeds.
If unsure, follow the specific maryada given by your acharya or local temple during Paryushan.
