    Short story on daya bhavana

    12 months ago 71

Here is a simple Jain short story on Daya Bhavana (the contemplation of compassion).

    The Quiet Bowl

In a small town lived Meera, a young shravika who helped her mother at their little shop. Each morning, Meera carried a bowl of water to the doorstep for thirsty travelers. One summer the heat became fierce. The lake dried to muddy patches, birds fell silent, and even the wind seemed tired.

One afternoon Meera noticed a line of ants marching across the shop threshold toward the bowl. She gently moved the bowl aside to avoid their path, but then saw a sparrow panting on the parapet. If she kept the bowl near the doorway, the sparrow would not come down; if she placed it on the ground, the ants might drown. Meera paused and remembered Daya Bhavana: “All souls are like me. I do not wish harm to any.”

She gathered smooth pebbles and placed them inside the bowl so the water was shallow at the edges and deeper in the middle. She set a small twig as a bridge for the ants, and a flat stone as a perch for the sparrow. Then she carried a pinch of grain to a corner away from the bowl so the birds would not scatter the ants. Finally, she swept the threshold gently, guiding the ant line along a safer route with a few crumbs to keep them occupied.

Her father watched and smiled. “You have turned one bowl into a refuge,” he said.

Days passed. A squirrel learned to sip from the shallow rim. Bees visited without falling in. The sparrow bathed and flew away bright. Even a stray dog lapped from the deeper middle without splashing the tiny marchers.

One evening a traveler arrived, parched and weary. Meera offered a separate cup of water, then quietly refilled the animals’ bowl. The traveler, surprised, asked, “Why such care for insects and birds when even people are thirsty?”

Meera answered softly, “Compassion is not a scale to weigh big and small. It is a lamp. When it is lit, it shines on all.”

The traveler sat for a while, watching the little sanctuary at the doorstep—the careful pebbles, the twig bridge, the gentle order that allowed many lives to share the same water without fear. He felt his own heart become light. Before leaving, he placed a coin on the counter. “For more pebbles,” he said.

That night a tiny drizzle began. By morning, the dust smelled new, and the lake held a thin, silver skin. Meera looked at the bowl. A few ants climbed the twig, a bee hovered, and the sparrow sang from the parapet. She bowed inwardly and renewed her vow: to think, speak, and act so that no being is harmed and, where possible, gently helped.

This is Daya Bhavana: seeing every jiva as oneself, arranging one’s conduct with care, avoiding even subtle violence, and offering help within one’s capacity—quietly, without pride, and with equal regard for all.
