What is porisi and sath porisi
In Jain daily conduct, these words indicate “when” you take your first food or drink, counted from local sunrise.
- Porsi: taking food/drink 1 porsi after sunrise, i.e., 3 hours after sunrise.
- Sadh Porsi (often heard as “sath porisi”): taking food/drink 1.5 porsi after sunrise, i.e., 4 hours 30 minutes after sunrise.
Example: If sunrise is at 6:00 AM
- Porsi time = 9:00 AM
- Sadh Porsi time = 10:30 AM
Use: Jains take a pachchakkhan (vow) such as “Today I will eat at Porsi/Sadh Porsi,” as a form of aahar-sanyam (restraint in food), mindfulness, and discipline.
Notes by tradition:
- Shvetambar: These terms are widely used exactly as above.
- Digambar: The practice of fixing eating-times from sunrise is also followed, though local terms and emphasis may vary; always follow your own sangh/guru’s guidance.
Always calculate from the actual sunrise at your location for that day.
