Can I eat apple
Yes. In Jain Dharma, apple is a “phala” (fruit) and is permitted.
How to eat it in a Jain way (ahimsa and care):
- Eat fruit that is already detached; do not pluck from the tree yourself.
- Wash with filtered water and check carefully for insects or worm holes.
- Prefer eating in daylight; strict Jains avoid eating after sunset to reduce harm to tiny beings.
- Eat it fresh; do not keep cut apple overnight.
- Avoid preparations that involve fermentation or alcohol (e.g., hard cider) and avoid honey coatings.
Tradition notes:
- Shwetambar: During Paryushan, green vegetables are avoided; fruits like apple are generally allowed unless you have taken a special fast (upvas) restricting all food.
- Digambar: During Das Lakshan and other vows, many observe upvas/ekasan; fruit is fine unless your specific vow limits it.
If you are on a particular vrata (fast or renunciation), follow that rule first.
