Why do we do upvas
In Jain Dharma, we do Upvas (fasting) to live closer to the soul and reduce karma.
- True meaning: Upvas = “upa” (near) + “vas” (to dwell) — staying near the Self by withdrawing from sense‑pleasures and food.
- Spiritual purpose:
How it is observed (in simple terms)
- Take pachchakkhan (a clear vow) before sunset.
- Spend the day in punya karya: pratikraman, paath, swadhyaya, silence, forgiveness, and seva.
- Break the fast (parna) with simplicity and gratitude, maintaining inner purity of intention (bhav).
Shvetambar and Digambar notes
- Both traditions value Upvas as powerful tapa for samvar–nirjara.
- Practice details can differ:
Important cautions
- Bhav matters more than body‑show. Do it humbly, without pride or display.
- Observe only as per health, capacity, and guru’s guidance. Do not harm the body; Jain tapa is for purification, not self‑punishment.
