    Pani kaal in paryushan

    12 months ago 139

“Pāni kāl” in Paryushan = the permitted time to drink boiled water.

    Simple guidance

    • What: Only boiled (filtered) water is allowed.
    • When: Daylight only. Common practice is from about 48 minutes after sunrise (Navkārsi) until sunset. After sunset, no water (Panahār/Chauvihār).
    • How fresh: Because Paryushan falls in Chaturmās, the “kal” (validity) of boiled water is generally taken as up to 24 hours; thereafter it should not be used.
    • Fasting types:
    - Tivihār upvās: boiled water allowed only within pani kāl. - Chauvihār upvās: no water at all.
    • Local timings: Temples/Sangh usually announce exact daily pani kāl based on sunrise–sunset for your city. Follow that notice or your guru’s instructions.

    Tradition notes

    • Śvetāmbara and Digambara laity both observe the daylight-only rule for water during Paryushan/Daśalakṣaṇa; minor variations (e.g., starting exactly at sunrise vs. after Navkārsi) depend on local maryādā. Always follow your sect’s declared timings.
