    logassa sutra meaning

    one year ago 163

The Logassa Sutra (also called Logassa Ujjoyagare Sutra) is a significant Jain prayer found in the Jain Agamas. Its full name is “Logassa Ujjoyagare Sutra.” It is recited primarily by Śvetāmbara Jains as part of daily prayers and rituals.

Meaning and Purpose: The Logassa Sutra is a hymn of obeisance (namaskāra) to the twenty-four Tirthankaras (spiritual conquerors) of Jainism, seeking their blessings. The term "Logassa" means "of the world"—thus, it refers to those who have conquered the world of passions and attained liberation. The prayer expresses utmost devotion and surrender to these enlightened beings.

    Essence of the Sutra:

    • The reciter bows to all the Tirthankaras who have destroyed all karmas and have attained omniscience and liberation.
    • It seeks to emulate their virtues and requests their guidance on the path of liberation.
    • The prayer is a reminder of humility, respect, and the aspiration to follow the teachings of the Tirthankaras.

A translation of the core meaning: > "I bow to all the Arihantas (Tirthankaras), the pure souls, who reside in all the directions, who have conquered their passions, who are destroyers of the enemies of karma, who possess infinite knowledge, perception, conduct, and power, and who are the benefactors of all living beings."

    Significance in Jain Practice:

    • Regular recitation is believed to purify the mind and help one progress spiritually.
    • It is often recited during samayika (period of meditation and equanimity), pratikraman (ritual of repentance), and other religious observances.

In summary, the Logassa Sutra is a central Jain prayer expressing reverence and devotion to the Tirthankaras, inspiring practitioners to walk the path of righteousness and spiritual purity.
