Can we eat ripe bananas
Yes. Ripe bananas are allowed in Jain diet for laypeople (both Shvetambar and Digambar), because they are fruits from a non-root plant.
How to eat them with minimum hiṃsā and proper niyam:
- Eat only in daylight (avoid after sunset).
- Wash well; peel and eat fresh. Avoid overripe, spotted, fermented, or insect‑infested bananas.
- Do not mix with honey (honey is completely prohibited in Jain Dharma).
- If you have taken specific vows, follow them: during Upavās, Aayambil, or strict Paakī/Posadh observances, fruits like bananas are generally not to be taken unless your pachchakhan permits.
- Prefer seasonal, clean produce; avoid waste.
Notes on traditions:
- Shvetambar and Digambar lay followers: permitted with the above care.
- Sādhus/Sādhvīs follow much stricter aahar rules (no storage, specific receiving methods), so practice differs for ascetics.
