    Antagad dada Q&A

    12 months ago 386

Here is a simple Q&A on the Antakrddasha Sutra (Prakrit: Antagadadasāo), keeping to authentic Jain tradition.

    Q. What is the Antakrddasha Sutra? A. It is the 8th Anga (canonical scripture) of the Śvetāmbara Jain Āgamas. “Antakrddasha” means “ten chapters on those who brought an end (anta) to saṁsāra.”

    Q. What does this scripture contain? A. Narratives of men and women who, in that very lifetime, destroyed karmas and attained liberation (moksha). The lives show the power of right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, austerity, control of passions, non‑attachment, and pure dying (sallekhanā/samādhi‑maraṇa).

    Q. In which language is it composed? A. Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit (the classical language of many Jain Āgamas).

    Q. How is it different from the Anuttaropapātika‑daśā Sutra? A. Antakrddasha presents those who attained moksha in the same birth. Anuttaropapātika‑daśā (the 9th Anga) presents those reborn in the highest heavens who then attain moksha in the next birth.

    Q. What is its spiritual message? A. Wherever right faith awakens and vows are lived with inner purity, even laypeople and ascetics can end saṁsāra. The text inspires dispassion, forgiveness, aparigraha, and vigilance over kashāyas (anger, pride, deceit, greed).

    Q. Is there any difference between Śvetāmbara and Digambara views? A. Yes. Śvetāmbaras preserve Antakrddasha as an Anga. Digambaras do not accept the Śvetāmbara Angas as extant canonical texts; the ideals and stories are honored in Digambara literature, but Antakrddasha itself is not part of their surviving canon.

    Q. When is it typically studied or recited? A. Commonly during Paryuṣaṇa/Das Lakṣaṇa pravachans and scriptural study sessions, to reflect on the direct path to liberation and to strengthen samyaktva and vows.

    Q. What practices does it encourage in daily life? A. Truthful living, non‑violence in thought–speech–action, restraint in possessions and enjoyments, regular pratikramaṇa, meditation (kāyotsarga, dhyāna), charity free of pride, and steady reduction of passions leading to equanimity at life’s end.

    Q. Does it prescribe rituals? A. It is primarily hagiography and doctrine, not a ritual manual. Its “ritual” is inner purification: vows, tapas, and vigilance culminating in kevala‑mārga.

    Q. Why is it important for sādhu‑sādhvīs and laypeople? A. It offers living proofs that liberation is a present possibility when one lives the three jewels steadfastly, guiding ascetics and householders toward the same goal with conviction and humility.
