sapt rass according jainism
In Jain Dharma, the classical count is of six tastes (ṣaḍ‑rasa), not seven. The seven-taste (sapt rasa) idea comes from later or colloquial usage, but standard Jain scriptures and traditional acharyas speak of six.
The six tastes (Ṣaḍ‑rasa) 1) Madhura – sweet 2) Amla – sour 3) Lavaṇa – salty 4) Kaṭu – pungent/spicy 5) Tikta – bitter 6) Kaṣāya – astringent
Traditional guidance
- Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions accept these six tastes.
- Jain achars advise moderation in all tastes and special restraint with very sour, salty, and pungent foods, as they can excite the senses and hinder saiyam (self‑restraint).
- Simplicity in food supports ahiṁsā, aparigraha, and equanimity.
