Mangoes
In Jainism, the consumption of mangoes is generally permitted for lay followers (śrāvakas), as mangoes are classified as fruits, which involve minimal harm to living beings when harvested. However, Jain monks and nuns (śramaṇas) follow even stricter dietary rules, and they may avoid fruits that contain many seeds, as eating and discarding seeds can potentially harm the life within them. Additionally, Jains avoid consuming fruits that might harbor many microscopic life forms or that are overripe and decaying.
Jains also avoid eating mangoes (or any fruit) that have fallen to the ground and started decaying, in line with the principle of ahiṃsā (non-violence). During certain religious observances, fasting, or Paryushana, Jains may further restrict their diet, sometimes including abstaining from certain fruits.
Overall, for householders, eating fresh, ripe, and properly harvested mangoes is acceptable within Jain dietary guidelines.
