According to Jain tradition, Bhagwan Mahavir Swami faced 22 upsargs (severe afflictions or obstacles) during his life, especially during his period of spiritual practice and propagation of his teachings. These upsargs were caused by various individuals, including Sangam Dev, who was a celestial being (deva) with past animosity towards Mahavir. Despite facing these hardships, Mahavir Swami remained steadfast in his practice of forgiveness, non-violence, and equanimity.
