Top 10 commandments of jain
Jainism does not have “Ten Commandments.” Instead, our tradition teaches Ten Supreme Virtues (Das Dharma/Das Lakshan). These are the clearest “top ten” ethical principles in Jain Dharma.
The Ten Supreme Virtues (Das Lakshan)
- Uttam Kshamā — Supreme Forgiveness: Let go of anger; ask and grant forgiveness to all beings.
- Uttam Mārdava — Supreme Humility: Remove pride and ego; be gentle and respectful.
- Uttam Ārjava — Supreme Straightforwardness: Be honest and transparent in thought, word, and deed.
- Uttam Shaucha — Supreme Purity/Contentment: Keep mind and conduct pure; stay content with what you have.
- Uttam Satya — Supreme Truthfulness: Speak beneficial truth; avoid lies and deceit.
- Uttam Saṃyam — Supreme Self‑restraint: Control senses and passions; avoid harm to any life.
- Uttam Tap — Supreme Austerity: Practice fasting, discipline, and endurance for inner purification.
- Uttam Tyāg — Supreme Renunciation: Give up attachments and excess; cultivate generosity.
- Uttam Akinchanaya — Supreme Non‑attachment/Non‑possessiveness: Live simply; reduce possessions and dependence.
- Uttam Brahmacharya — Supreme Chastity: Preserve purity of mind and body; regulate sensuality.
Traditions
- Digambar: These ten are the focus of the Das‑Lakshan Parva (ten days), each day devoted to one virtue.
- Shvetambar: During Paryushan, emphasis is on repentance and purification; the same ten virtues are honored in spirit.
