How to break eight days fast
In Jain tradition, breaking an eight‑day fast (Athai) is called Parṇā. Keep it simple, pure, and within Parṇā‑kāl (auspicious time).
What is the right time
- Complete Parṇā ideally within one muhūrta (about 48 minutes) from the prescribed time after sunrise on the next day.
Spiritual preparation (before Parṇā)
- Sit in a clean, quiet place; keep bhāv of detachment and gratitude.
- Do Navkār Mantra (at least 3 times) and offer Kṣamā (forgiveness) to all. It is customary to recite Navkār before and after taking water in any tapasya.
- Perform Pratikraman/Dev‑Vandan as per your practice.
- If you had taken a formal pachkhan (vow) for Athai, complete its samāpti (closure) with humility.
How to do Parṇā (step‑by‑step) 1) Begin with boiled, warm, filtered water (ubālu jalu), taken slowly in small sips. - Sit steadily; don’t drink in a hurry. - Maintain bhāv of śuddhi (purity) and kṛtajñatā (gratitude); recite Navkār again. 2) After a short pause, take very light, simple, well‑boiled items only, such as: - Rice gruel/water (pej) - Thin moong water or very light moong soup - Soft, plain khichdi (without oil, heavy spices, chili, or sour items) - Everything warm, freshly boiled, and properly filtered 3) Eat little; stop before feeling full. Avoid fried, spicy, sour, refrigerated, or heavy foods.
After Parṇā (the same day)
- Keep the day light; prefer boiled/warm, simple food only.
- No raw salads/fruit juices initially; avoid heavy dairy/sweets.
- Continue bhakti, svādhyāy, and kṣamā‑yāchanā. Offer dāna/prabhāvanā as per capacity.
Gradual return to normal diet
- Day 1 (Parṇā day): water → pej/moong water → light khichdi.
- Day 2: slightly thicker khichdi/dal; still mild and limited quantity.
- Day 3: resume your usual Jain āhār rules gradually; avoid excess.
Important notes
- Ahimsā includes care of your own body; if you feel faint or unwell, do Parṇā gently and early within Parṇā‑kāl.
- Customs can vary between Śvetāmbar and Digambar traditions, and by guru‑paramparā. The core principles are the same: Parṇā in proper time, begin with boiled water, keep food simple and boiled, and maintain pure bhāv. Follow the vidhi given by your guru or local sangh.
