Short answer

• After taking Tivihaar pachkhan, you have only 3 vihars (three “intake times”) for the day. Every time you drink water counts as 1 vihar. So:

- If you only drink water and don’t eat at all, you can drink up to 3 times. - If you eat once, that uses 1 vihar, so you can drink water only 2 times. - If you eat twice, only 1 water time remains, etc.

• Each sitting/opener counts as one vihar (multiple sips in the same sitting = 1 vihar).
• Water must be boiled and taken only during daylight; after sunset, no water under Tivihaar.

Notes by tradition

• Shwetambar and Digambar both treat each separate intake (food, water, medicine if allowed) as a vihar. Some local maryadas may also count medicine as a separate vihar—set this clearly in your pachkhan.
